The Time to Give Back is Back

33rd Annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner

Jeremiah Arcilla, Staff Writer

Tolleson Union High School  held the 33rd Annual Community Thanksgiving dinner on Thanksgiving Day in the campus’ cafeteria.

The event was first introduced in 1982 when a former principal and district superintendent of Tolleson Union High School, Charles A. Landis, wanted to provide for families and students in need. Volunteers helped prepare and serve plates of  turkey, mashed potatoes, bread, corn, and pumpkin or apple pie.

Approximately 120 men and women volunteered in the event, including about 48 Sierra Linda students. The Sierra Linda students attended the event representing both their school, their club, and their generosity towards their community.

A few students and teachers who have attended were nice enough to give me their comments on the event:

Ms. Clark

Miss Clark, Class of 2017 Advisor

“I choose to be involved in the event to give back to our community and to influence our students to be involved. I was really impressed by the overall involvement of our community; there was a huge turnout of volunteers. Our students at Sierra Linda were professional and took the time to sit with individuals who were eating by themselves. This really touched my heart!”

Kayla A

Kayla Arcilla, Student Government ’17

“I thought it was a good idea to volunteer because I like to help people who need it. People were friendly, nice, and generous to me as I helped serve my community.”

Melanie

Melanie Diaz, National Honors Society ’17

“Ever since I was young I felt compelled to help other people. People were very happy and very grateful that we were giving up our time to help provide for them.”
