Taking pictures around campus has been the main focus for Mr. Ross Photography 3-4 students. On April 29th students traveled downtown to take pictures as part of their landscape and architecture unit. The students were asked to connect their photo lab experience to a real world climate.

The 22 students, chaperoned by Mr. Marks and Ross, comprised of students from Mr. Ross’ Photo 3-4, select Photo 1-2, newspaper, and yearbook students. The day started off with a walking tour of downtown Phoenix. The students started on Central and Fillmore and walked south on Central. Their terminal objective was to capture city landscapes and sky scrapers.

“This was a great trip and I m glad we got to go. It was cool taking pictures of real world elements. “said junior Photo 3-4  student Jasmyn Leyva.

After touring and walking the city, the students were guest at the ASU Walter Cronkite School of Journalism. The students were hosted by high school director Mrs. Anita Luera.

Not only did the students get to tour the Channel 8 and Cronkite news sets, control rooms, photo classrooms, and ASU Blaze Radio, but had a private photo workshop with award wining  ASU photo Professor Roy Dabner. The 45 minute session allowed students to learn new techniques, see award winning photos and ask questions.

Professor Dabner then allowed students to sit in on one of his college photographer classes. Students saw ASU seniors present final projects and were offered words of wisdom from the class.

“That was cool hearing all the neat things students learned and did in the class. I was motivated not only about taking pictures, but also about getting involved and taking on more opportunities. “said junior Christian Martin

When asked about making this trip an annual event veteran journalism teacher Mr. Larry Ross said, “Absolutely. This was a great opportunity for my students to apply concepts that were taught in the classroom. They were also able to assess the level of expectation from a college photo class. We are fortunate to have a great partnership with A.S.U. and Mrs. Luera

Before returning to campus the students experienced what ASU students eat by enjoying an all you can eat lunch at the Taylor Place.  There the were able to experience the college life and culture.  Currently, the SLHS journalism program has two alumni, Jackie Lopez (Class of 2013) and Ivonne Arballo (Class of 2016) that are students in the ASU Cronkite School of Journalism.
