Team off to a great start

On December 7th, Sierra Linda varsity wrestling team held a dual meet in the gym against Lake Havasu, South Mountain and Desert Edge. They won 2 out of 3 outstanding matches. Wins were against Lake Havasu (54-33) and South mountain (78-6).  However, Desert Edge defeated them 54-32.

In the sport of wrestling it is a one on one battle between just two people. The team practices hard for 2-3 hours in the hot practice room located on the eastside of the boys  locker room. It is a tough sport and builds character and toughness.

“Being taken to the matt is one of the worst feelings ever” said Junior Johnny Carrasco.

Their current record as of 12/13/ is 8-3 in dual meets. Teams they have defeated this year are: Ironwood, Camelback, Cortez , Youngker, Shadow Ridge,  Carl Hayden, Lake Havasu, and South Mountain.

The team placed 2nd in the Agua Fria Tournament for the second year in a row. Their competition will be in the Ironwood High Eagle Invitational on December 29th.

At time of deadline coach Figueroa was unavailable for comment. Assistant coaches this year are Mr. Alfred Palange and Mr. Slate Stout

The toughest part in a match is trying to study their moves and trying not to get put on your back“. said junior Sebastian Fuentes who has a current record of 6-5.
