Have you ever had a female family member that was paid less than her male coworkers? Feminism is the beliefs that everyone should have the same equal privileges and opportunities such as Title IX no matter if you’re a man, woman, straight, gay, brown or white.

Title IX is a major piece of legislation included in the Education Amendments 1972 that requires schools that receive federal funds to provide girls and women with equal opportunity to compete in sports.

Gender equality (both women and men have the same equal rights) is such a hot topic that either everyone is for or against like equal pay.

“Feminism is good at a certain extent. Everything needs balance, it is okay but when it goes into the extreme of whether you’re bashing on the male gender then it not cool but it is when you’re trying to make things fair like higher job rates and equal pay,” says SLHS senior Cassandra Jackson.

Many people go out into the world to pursue their career dreams such as being a doctor, lawyer, nurse, journalist, etc. Each student pays the same amount for their education but when they face the real world, when they get their jobs, women are paid less than men. No one knows exactly why this happens but many feminists believe because people think woman are less superior to men.

“That definitely stresses me and especially because there are all these kinds of laws that says if you don’t figure out that you’re being paid less than your male counterpart for no good reason in a number of days of you being employed, you can’t fight that,” says English teacher Ms. Erickson.

Even though people think that everyone should be paid the same no matter the gender you are, not everyone thinks this.

“I think both men and woman should be provided with the same opportunities, it’s important to develop the society where you want to encourage women to go out and get an education,” says history teacher Mr. Palange.
